The department renders quality, professional and affordable health care services, effects disease prevention and control, curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative measures, creates and increases awareness of health and environmental issues through information, education and communication that is responsive and peculiar to the health problems of our community.
A network of hospitals, clinics and health centers provide basic facilities throughout the town. The department, in conjunction with various non- governmental and private agencies, as well as donors, maintains a comprehensive, coordinated and integrated health system. The technical aspects of health services cover research, disease control, environmental health and health education.
In the aggressive development of this sector, participatory planning ensures that health needs are met by implementing community based health interventions. The department also trains community health workers from individual wards, thus extending health care throughout the whole service area.
Functions of the health department
Health Education and Promotion Unit
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to take control over and improve their health.
The Health Promotion Unit works with a range of government departments, and non-government agencies to bring about changes that will lead to better health for all.
The Unit focuses on:
Implementation of health promotion strategies
Identification of health promotion needs and priorities
Coordination of health promotion activities
Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health promotion activities
The department provides expert knowledge in managing drug therapy. We are available to answer your questions and provide private counseling and education. The pharmacy section provides the best total patient care.
The section is responsible for; premises inspections, food quality monitoring, water quality monitoring, water and sanitation promotion, disease surveillance, prevention and control, port health activities, public health legislation, health and hygiene education, air pollution control unit, hazardous substance and articles control unit.

Health Education and Promotion
The section maintains a comprehensive, coordinated and integrated health system.
The broad-based support for the health sector has been instrumental over the past decade in the decline of certain diseases such as polio and the success of certain programmes. Health centers or local clinics are responsible for immunization of children, ante and post natal care services, family planning consultations, voluntary medical male circumcision and basic curative services.
